Tycho hit the stage at McDonald Theatre on Sunday, September 15th on the fourth stop of their Infinite Health tour with opening act, NASAYA. Tycho (Scott Hansen) performed with his band members, Zac Brown (guitar), Rory O’Connor (drums) and Billy Kim (bass guitar). Hansen played the keyboard, synthesizer and guitar varying between the songs as his artistic vision unfolded.
Following the recent release of Tycho's sixth album, Infinite Health on August 30th, Eugene welcomed the musicians with dancing feet and open eyes. Their set was incredibly thought out and diverse, starting with “Phantom” from their recent album created with Chris Taylor (Co-Producer and mixer from Grizzly Bear) and Zac Brown. The set list then flowed into “Spectre” from the album Awake and “Hours” from Dive. They brought more songs from the Infinite Health album including “Consciousness Felt,” “Green,” "Devices" and “Totem.” Their set ended with “Epoch” which was an incredible way for them to conclude leaving the audience craving more. Of course, the crowd called out for an Encore, with the band making them work for it. They eventually came back out gifting the crowd the beautiful and ethereal track “Awake” and ending the show graciously with “Division” from Weather.
Tycho was an experience of not only incredible tunes but also an ethereal show of dancing lights and digital art stretching across the stage. They used perpendicular lines within their artistry which isn’t something you see very often in performances. These lines brought attention to the simplicity of Tycho’s artistic focus in using analog equipment, VCR, and retro themes. Minimalism at it’s finest with embellishment and a shifted perspective.
The theme and vibe that Tycho brings to his light performances reflect the energy of his music. There is an organic interplay of utilizing futuristic synths and the pounding of drum shells tuned to the sound of the 70’s. Repeated catchy bass lines that are easily danceable keep the pulse as perfectly curated guitar tones sweep the air. Tycho’s guitarist Zac Brown is a powerhouse of a performer in holding the audience in bliss at every note he plays. The performance as a whole echoes what you would hear within their studio recordings. It’s amazing that they can catch the sound of their recordings and translate what is happening to the stage.
This live performance was a phenomenal work of artistry, everywhere from the lights that danced across the room to the beautiful visual imagery of colors in motion. The projected background created the illusion that the images were designed to wrap the band in ambient yet futuristic art. The music, the lights, the energy… Tycho gave the crowd a night to remember.
