Deschutes County Fairgrounds
Redmond, OR

Words by Ryleigh Hutson & Alexander Fornes

We are counting down the days to the second Cascade Equinox Festival taking place September 20 - 22. As we close out the summer months and welcome in the fall, we head to the Deschutes County Fairgrounds in Redmond, OR to explore a diverse and eclectic blend of music including Jam, Funk, Bluegrass and EDM acts. With so many artists and genres to explore, it may be overwhelming to plan which bands are a must-see and which sets you’ll spontaneously stumble upon. So we came up with 5 artists not to miss at Cascade Equinox!

STS9 | Sound Tribe Sector 9 are among legends within the livetronica festival jam scene. This instrumental 5 piece from Georgia has been crafting their eclectic sound and captivating performances since 1997. By now, they have built a devoted fan base that is keen to their musicianship and uniqueness of every set. Equally brilliant light shows accompany their sound which add to the richness of each experience. The band just released Chromalight, a live album release of last year's reveal performance at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. This performance was a multi-sensory live music experience that is designed to bridge the relationship of color to musical notes. Within Chromalight are fourteen new songs including two previously released singles “Searchlight” and “Fires.” This performance at Cascade Equinox Festival will be no exception to their masterful experimentation of the extraordinary elements of sound and light.

Jungle | If you're craving a funky, soulful, electro-pop beat, look no further. Jungle is a British band founded by producers Josh Lloyd and Tom McFarland in 2013, with their newest addition Lydia Kitto as the lead vocalist. Jungle released their newest single “Let’s Go Back Now” on September 6th. This single continues the musical style they are aiming to capture, with strong vocals and a groovy beat. Their most recent album Volcano released in 2023, is likely going to bring a great crowd to the audience from how popular the songs “Back in 74” and “I’ve Been In Love” became on many social media platforms. Jungle will just be finishing their tour in the UK and CEF will be their second stop in the US! This will be an exciting live show that will guarantee a dance party!

Dirtwire | Dirtwire is an absolute do-not-miss experience! This will be their second time performing at CEF and we hope they stick around for a while! Each live show they perform is said to be a surprise celebration event for the uncommon, worldly musical instruments. Dirtwire is an American band formed by Evan Fraser, David Satori, and Mark Reveley. 2024 has been very creative for this group as they have just released their 5th single of the year on September 6th, “Heavy In This World.” Their style of music is referred to as “swamptronica experimental,” a rare title for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Häana | Häana is a 2x Grammy nominated recording artist, producer and composer based in Los Angeles. She is known for her lush ethereal Nordic downtempo music which highlights electronic synth elements and live violin performances. Her set is brilliantly placed just after the opening ceremony of the festival which will take place at the main Equinox stage starting at 5:00 PM. The transition of ceremonial energy into Häana’s set will be a beautiful chance to soak her music in for what it truly is just before the sun starts to set.

SPUNJ | Cascade Equinox Festival welcomes the local multi-genre group of four from Eugene, Oregon called SPUNJ. SPUNJ is a high-energy, funky, “auditory experience.” Formed by Sage McCommas (drums/vocals), Josh Harris (guitar/vocals), David Richards (bass/saxophone/vocals) and Dan Underkofler (keyboards/vocals), the band has been moving up in the ranks whilst making their debut at festivals as they branch out of the local pacific northwest scene. Returning to Oregon to perform at Cascade Equinox is sure to be a special set for all to see!

Livetronica Sampler 3.22.11

Words by Greg Molitor ( ReMIND Photography ) Ozric Tentacles This British group has proven innovative throughout the years offering a space-rock meets psytrance sound that remains alive to this day. Though never having a major record label, Ozric Tentacles has produced 28 albums of diverse psychedelia throughout its career. The band met at the Stonehenge Free Festival in 1983 and truly fathered livetronica music with its use of sequencers and synthesizers. Simply put, there would be no livetronica without Ozric Tentacles. www.ozrics.com Octopus Nebula Colorado’s Octopus Nebula has certainly hit its stride as of late with its constant touring and increased festival interest. The group expands on the deep sounds of highly regarded acts such as STS9 and Shpongle but also carves a path of its own with its fresh takes on synthesizer tones and sampling in the live setting. Buckethead: Gimmick or Guitar God?

Words & Photos By Nicholas Stock ( phatphlogblog.blogspot.com ) At what point does the gimmick overshadow the performance? The obvious answer is Buckethead. The man is an amazing guitarist but something is not right in this world. The idea a performer who dons a KFC chicken bucket on his head for a concert has always intrigued me, and some of his side projects such as Colonel Claypool’s Bernie Bucket of Brains have been huge successes. However his performance last weekend in Fort Collins simply left me perplexed. From his robotic dancing, to his nunchuck display, to the fact the he performed with an iPod rather than a band all added to my confusion. Going into the show I was ready to be blown away, despite rumblings of disgruntled fans from the previous night’s show at The Gothic. Buckethead had had some sound issues and some missed cues in Denver but I was still trying to be positive for the show in Fort Collins. It did go off without a hitch technically but that was the least

The Origin of MusicMarauders

Words By J-man "What should I name this fucking thing?" I asked myself in the midst of a joint in my Upstate, NY apartment. "It's got to be something with just 'Music'in the title. Nothing more specific than that, as we'll be covering a wide variety of genres." One more drag on the joint yielded the memory of driving down Woodward Ave. in Detroit, listening to Tribe Called Quest's Midnight Marauders. "MusicMarauders! That's it... It completely encompasses what we do in the sense the we are 'maraudering' or 'pillaging' for music," I thought as I stared out of the window at about three and a half feet of fresh Upstate snow. First things first, the domain had to be registered. "Do I have ten dollars in my account?" I thought to myself from a position of just scraping by. Pulling out my shiny, rarely used debit card, I put it to the test and was able to secure MusicMarauders.com. "What's next?" I
