X & James Intveld 7.20.23

Washington's Fort Collins, CO Words & Photos by Mike Sherry Photo X has been thrilling audiences across this planet for almost five decades and counting. Last Thursday Fort Collins got its turn and packed into Washington's. So choice to see this fledgling venue attracting the legends from L.A. Kicking off the evening was singer-songwriter James Intveld, fronting a solid band with a warm country sound. A veteran of The Blasters, James charmed the early audience with tunes like “ All the Way from Memphis, ”  its rollicking beat demonstrating why X invited James on tour. After mentioning how X bassist John Doe encouraged some setlist tweaking from James' lengthy catalog, John was welcomed onstage to sing the Hank Snow classic “ Fool Such as I. ” X wasted no time elevating the pulse, opening with the rocker “ Water and Wine ” from 2020's Alphabetland . A non-stop set of nearly two dozen career-spanning songs commenced, peppered with a few new tunes that are as yet unre

ALBUM REVIEW | Shakti's This Moment

Words by J. Picard The word “Shakti” comes from the Sanskrit word “Sakti,” which means "power or divine energy." It’s the perfect name for a project that includes such virtuosity individually that the sum of its parts has been called “the pinnacle, the nirvana of [Zakir Hussain’s] musical career,” according to the tabla virtuoso himself. It’s a bold statement coming from someone who has performed with Ravi Shankar, Sultan Khan, members of The Beatles, The Grateful Dead and more. Hussain’s western counterpart, guitarist John McLaughlin, has recorded with Miles Davis, Tony Williams and of course Mahavishnu Orchestra, called Shakti a “thrill.” The band came together in 1974 along with violinist L. Shankar and T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram on Ghatam, releasing three albums over the course of 1976 & 1977, marking 46 years since their last release. A brief revival took place in 1997 called Remembering Shakti that included Selvaganesh Vinayakram (son of “Vikku”), mandolin player U.

The John Fogerty Incident 7.14.23

Red Rocks Park & Amphitheatre Morrison, CO Words by J. Picard Photos by Nancy Isaac Photography "Early in the evening, just about supper time," over at Red Rocks, sound check started to unwind. I walked along the main road through the sprawling complex from the lower north lot to the trading post where I would meet MusicMarauders photographer, Nancy Isaac, for my media pass. It's been decades since Creedence Clearwater Revival frontman and guitarist owned the rights to his music. After fifty years, all of that changed. Around 5:30 PM I scurried past the lower entrances to the fable venue where I could hear The String Cheese Incident and John Fogerty running through classic Creedence material and Fogerty sounded incredible! Leading up to the show, I resisted listening to any recent Fogerty as I wanted to go into the experience without expectation. On too many occasions I've wandered into a show to hear one of my favorites from the past, only to be disappointed by y

Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour Leaves Mile High Enchanted

Friday, July 14, 2023 Empower Field at Mile High Denver, CO Words by Kim Mock Photos by Dylan Flores Photography I thought I knew what to expect walking into Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour, seeing clips and hearing about it all over social media. The hype was real and I was ready for it, or was I? I consider myself a Taylor Swift fan, maybe the next level up from casual. Okay, I'm not going to lie, I love her. No matter what you think of her, she is one of the most influential artists of our generation. She’s been at this for seventeen years, putting out countless albums and making America fall in love with her. Eras Tour tickets were probably some of the hardest tickets to get this summer, leaving fans angry and frustrated with the Ticketmaster system and wondering how they were going to get into these shows. With aftermarket ticket prices skyrocketing, it seemed impossible. I almost bought severely overpriced tickets and had to stop myself. I could not spend that much money, an

Flaming Lips, Reggie Watts & Eric Andre 6.22.23

Mission Ballroom Denver, CO Words & Photos by Andrew Wyatt Incidental moments, like simply hearing the wavering tone of a person’s voice can lead to unexpectedly dramatic conclusions. About 25 years ago a little-known (to Americans) drummer of the Japanese band, the Boredoms, found herself in a recording studio with the Flaming Lips adding background vocals that brought to mind an unsettling thought. After listening to the playback of her screams, Yoshimi P-We commented that the piercing, primal quality of her voice sounded like she was battling monsters. As the story goes, the producer agreed, commenting that her screams sounded like she was either having sex with or being attacked by robots. Soon afterward their innocuous comments ignited the inspiration for the title song that would also become the name of the album, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots . As the electronic chirping of synthesizers rub against the gentle acoustic guitar melody in the title track, an epic struggle is e
