Thunderpussy 3.17.23

The Cabot Beverly, MA Words & Photos by Arlene Brown ( BrownFotoBug ) Bringing all the luck and love to the Boston masses, Thunderpussy definitely showed their love of rocking a stage to the 2,500 in attendance on Saint Patrick’s Day in Boston. Touring with Jerry Cantrell and crew, Thunderpussy introduced themselves to new fans in the only way Thunderpussy knows: bold, loud, and absolutely rocking beauty. Thunderpussy is a fierce Seattle band fronted by the stunning Molly Sides. She and guitarist Whitney Petty (who also plays drums and bass) started the band in 2014 and were quickly joined by bassist M’Leah Julius (and yes, she also plays drums!). Lindsey Elias is the one that actually plays drums and is the newest member to the party and joined in 2019. Don’t let their sparkle and flash fool you. They are WAY more than just sequins. These ladies are amazing musicians and performers. Technically trained musicians and dancers, Molly, Whitney, M’Leah, and Lindsey will soothe yo...

Dopapod 2.28.23

Animas City Theatre Durango, CO Words & Photos by Gab Kaplan Two weeks ago, jam band giants Dopapod made a rare trip to Durango, Colorado to end February with some heady Tuesday-night-shredding at the town’s beloved venue, Animas City Theatre. Although the group visits Colorado at least once or twice a year, they had not played that particular stage since 2015. The turnout was great, especially for a weeknight in a small mountain town following a sold-out Spafford show there just three days prior. And how special for Durango to have been graced by not only those two groups but by Lespecial and Punkadelic as well - all within the same week! And somehow, even though I live in Denver, I was able to attend all of them. The show was the third date on their 2023 winter tour following their kickoff performances in Boulder and Fort Collins. It was one out of six Colorado dates on this tour. I was definitely lucky to have been able to catch this intimate performance. My original plan h...

Spafford 2.25.23

Animas City Theatre Durango, CO Words & Photos by Gab Kaplan Last month, Spafford ended their 2023 Spaffski Winter Tour in beautiful Durango, Colorado at a sold-out Animas City Theatre. The performance was the final of 8 ski town shows across Colorado including Telluride, Steamboat Springs, Frisco, Avon, Grand Junction, and Nederland. The group was lucky to have had this performance take place during a small lull in the snow that has been pounding the area all winter, as some of the other acts that have played in Durango and other Colorado ski towns this season have not had the same luxury. From inside the venue, you wouldn’t have been able to tell or even remember how cold it was outside as the heat from the dancing crowd kept it warm all night. The audience was of mixed ages and musical tastes, but everyone in attendance was there to get their funk on with the Arizona-based quartet. There were many students from Fort Lewis College present as well as some of Durango’s populati...

Lespecial & Punkadelic 2.22.23

Animas City Theatre Durango, CO Words & Photos by Gab Kaplan This past week I had the opportunity to visit Durango, Colorado for a week-long run of live music photojournalism. The small, southwestern mountain town with a population of just roughly 20,000 is built around the Animas River near the southern edge of the San Juan National Forest and Weminuche Wilderness. It sure feels small compared to the Denver Metro Area’s population of 3 million that I have become accustomed to recently. Abundant with breathable air and eye-catching landscapes, Durango is a home of 5 years that I have transitioned away from over the last year to go explore life from a different perspective over 300 miles away in Denver. What a treat it was to be in town for this show! The last time I was in the area was actually the last time that Lespecial was as well. Last August, the boys were playing one of their first runs of shows with Punkadelic bandleader and percussionist Mike Dillon at Motel Soco just an h...
