Viva Lyons! A Celebration of Community with The Infamous Stringdusters 9.13.14

Bohn Park Lyons, CO Words & Video By Nicholas Stock ( Fat Guerilla Productions ) Photos By Nicholas Stock & Kevin Hahn ( Split Open & Shoot ) As a resident of Northern Colorado the memories of the scars that were carved into the hillside by the biblical flooding of just a year ago are still very fresh in my mind. Roads, houses, and cars were pushed aside like playing cards on a wet table. The tranquil St. Vrain was transformed into a mile wide torrent that destroyed everything in its path. Residents could only stand by and watch as everything they knew was simply washed away. Now with just a year gone the town of Lyons is a community well on its way to revitalization. Colorado United is the state organization set up to aid in flood recovery. September 13th marked Colorado United Day, which was a day of service for residents to lend a hand in Lyons, Jamestown, and other affected communities. Oskar Blues and their Can’d Aide Foundation worked with other local breweri...

Leftover Salmon feat. Andy Hall and Bill Payne 8.31.14

Cervantes Masterpiece Denver, CO Words, Photos & Video By Nicholas Stock Very few things will lure me out after a Phish show. I mean honestly what’s the point? Phish is the pinnacle; they are the peak of the mountain. So to go through the trouble of heading to another bar/venue to see another band seems like a bit much, unless that other band is Leftover Salmon. For the second consecutive year Leftover Salmon has announced an after-Phish show at Cervantes. This year they definitely waited until the last minute to let us know. There was a conspicuously blank spot on the calendar on Cervantes’ website following two days with Fishman’s side project, Touchpants. When they finally did announce, barely a week before the Dick’s run, it didn’t take long for word to spread. I made the easy decision to venture out after three nights of Phish. Luckily my brother had to drive home and Cervantes was only moderately out of his way. I arrived around 12:40 AM and right at 1:00 AM the band ...

Phish 8.29 - 8.31.14

Dick’s Sporting Goods Park Commerce City, CO Words & Photos By Nicholas Stock ( Fat Guerilla Productions ) Friday, August 29th: For the fourth year in a row Phish graced Colorado with a three night run over Labor Day Weekend at the now beloved Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Many fans originally questioned the band’s decision to abandon more conventional venues for a giant metal soccer stadium. The last four years have transformed Dick’s from a simple three-show stand into a yearly festival on the Front Range. The first two years of 3.0 witnessed Phish playing at both Red Rocks and Telluride, and while the majesty of those two locales cannot be denied they meant that many fans were left out of the fun. The era of Dick’s changed all that with a spacious floor and ample seating, this 26,000-seat behemoth rivals any of the ‘sheds’ in the Midwest. Historically, Friday night has been one for a theme or trick and this year Phish did not disappoint. On a personal note Friday was t...

Burning Man 8.25 - 9.1.14

Black Rock City Gerlach, NV Words By J. Picard Photos By Carly Marthis & J. Picard Video By Carly Marthis Months in the making, Burning Man, a 70,000 person celebration of art and culture, challenges attendees to sustain for an entire week in the desert utilizing "radical self reliance." For these two burners, the quest began in June with excessive preparation concluding only once upon The Playa. The dried up prehistoric lake bed allows for no sustaining life outside of the unclassifiable group of world travelers. From Denver, CO we departed on our 2,200 mile trek across the country, tuning into one public radio jazz station after another, heading a mere fifteen hours west to the small desert town of Lovelock, NV, which would become our sort of outpost as wild and unpredictable events began to unfold. Our early morning Sunday arrival triggered sleep followed by last minute shopping, a few hours of kitchen prep and meal freezing. The final packing of the vehicle ...
